Better Futures, Together
Hartwell Foundation promotes social, educational, and environmental well-being for underserved, underrepresented, and vulnerable communities in Canada, Southeast Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa, and beyond.
We work alongside local partners to advance human rights, social justice, environmental sustainability, and gender equality for minorities, women, and vulnerable populations around the world. Our role is to provide the technology, training, and advocacy support; the communities we work with decide how to put them to use. That distinction shapes every program we run: we don't arrive with a fixed solution looking for a place to apply it. We start by listening to what a community says it needs, then build toward that, which is why our four programs look different from each other even though they share the same underlying goal.
Education, equity, environment, and community development aren't separate problems in the places we work; they're different entry points into the same cycle of disadvantage, which is why we run all four at once rather than picking one. Each program below is clickable: open it for a closer look at how it works and who it reaches.
We didn't design our programs around the SDGs, but looking at them side by side, the overlap is clear. Select a goal to see how.
These are true stories from the communities we work alongside. Each one is a single, real example out of many; the numbers below give a sense of the wider reach, but the stories are what that reach actually looks like up close.
"Through our Education & Skills Development program, Aishah gained the confidence and training to launch her own small business, providing for her family and inspiring other aspiring business owners in her community."
"Through our Community Empowerment & Development program, she gained access to tech development training. Now, she's using these new skills to empower her students, and inspiring a new generation of learners."
"Through our Fostering Environmental Sustainability program, Nalini spearheaded a community garden and recycling initiative. Her dedication has transformed her village, promoting sustainable practices and creating a greener, healthier environment for everyone."
WiseMind Hub and WiseMind Mesh answer the same underlying problem, unreliable connectivity, from two different directions: one brings the content offline, the other brings the network itself. RADIANCE Network and Global Justice Literacy both grew directly out of our Equity & Justice program, once it became clear that economic opportunity and legal awareness each needed a dedicated initiative of their own.
